In short: In April 2015, a SpaceX Dragon capsule successfully docked with the International Space Station, marking the company's sixth NASA-contracted resupply mission. Beyond essential food and cargo, the craft delivered a unique piece of equipment for the crew: an espresso machine designed to improve life in zero gravity.

On April 14, 2015, a Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying the unmanned Dragon cargo ship. Three days later, while the station orbited 257 statute miles above the Pacific Ocean, Expedition 43 crew members Samantha Cristoforetti and Terry Virts utilized the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture the vessel. The successful grapple occurred at 6:55 a.m. EDT, with the craft subsequently berthed to the orbital laboratory to remain for approximately one month.

The mission was part of a $1.6 billion contract between SpaceX and NASA, covering a total of twelve resupply trips. This specific flight delivered over two tons of supplies, including scientific experiments focused on understanding how zero gravity affects human vision, muscles, and bones. Notably, the cargo also included an espresso machine, a luxury intended to boost morale for the astronauts living in orbit.

The Dragon’s arrival highlighted the evolving landscape of space logistics. Since the retirement of the US space shuttle program in 2011, astronauts had relied on Russian Soyuz capsules for transport. While government-built ships from Russia, Japan, and Europe previously dominated cargo transport, SpaceX made history in 2012 as the first commercial entity to reach the station. At the time of this 2015 mission, SpaceX was already developing upgrades to transition the Dragon from a cargo freighter to a crewed vehicle, with Boeing similarly developing its CST-100 spacecraft for future manned flights.
