In short: SpaceX recently debuted Starfall, a secretive new return capsule designed to turn orbit into a manufacturing hub. Unlike the Dragon capsule, which ferries people, Starfall is built for the logistics of the future: rapid point-to-point cargo delivery and the return of goods made in microgravity.

Launched on June 23, 2026, Starfall marks a shift toward a commercial in-space manufacturing market. While SpaceX's Dragon capsule is a large, multi-purpose vehicle capable of hauling 6,600 pounds back to Earth, Starfall is a compact, disk-shaped spacecraft. It stands just 2.5 feet tall with a 10.2-foot diameter and weighs roughly 4,600 pounds. Its primary purpose is to provide affordable, routine access to microgravity environments for scientific research and the production of materials that cannot be created under Earth's gravity, such as single-crystal optical fibers or bio-printed human organs.

The vehicle's design is specialized for efficiency and safety. It consists of an aluminum top plate—where the cargo sits—and a detachable carbon-fiber heat shield. Notably, Starfall lacks a traditional propulsion system for de-orbiting. Instead, it uses an attitude control system powered by compressed inert gas, such as nitrogen, to orient the heat shield. Once on a pre-planned trajectory, the capsule enters the atmosphere and splashes down in the Pacific Ocean, assisted by parachutes. This 'loiter and return' model allows SpaceX to offer orbit as a service at scale.

By leveraging its launch dominance, SpaceX aims to create a self-sustaining market for space-made pharmaceuticals and high-value goods. While competitors like Varda Space and Outpost Space are also developing orbital return vehicles, SpaceX's vertical integration with the Falcon 9 and the upcoming Starship megarocket provides a unique advantage. Starship is expected to launch thousands of times per year, potentially carrying multiple Starfall units in a single mission to establish a rapid, global supply chain for space-manufactured products.
