Deflecting the inevitable: the science of planetary defense
In short: How do we stop an asteroid from hitting Earth? This video explores AIDA, a pioneering mission by the European Space Agency and the US to test real-world asteroid redirection techniques.
The Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA) represents a landmark collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the United States. It combines two distinct efforts: the Asteroid Impact Mission and the Double Asteroid Redirection Test.
Scheduled for 2022, the mission aims to physically shift an asteroid's orbit. The initiative was recently highlighted at a conference in Madrid, where artist Didi Rodan created a unique sand depiction of the planetary defense strategy.
