The end of the dinosaurs was not the end of giants

The Bizarre Creatures that Lived on Earth After the Dinosaurs · 14:50 · Video: Destiny · Watch at the source

In short: We often imagine the world shrinking after the dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago. In reality, the apocalypse paved the way for a new era of gigantism. From massive ground sloths to fearsome sharks, life didn't just recover; it innovated, filling the void with some of the largest creatures to ever roam.

Following the catastrophic asteroid impact 65 million years ago, the Earth underwent a radical ecological transformation. While the non-avian dinosaurs were wiped out, the survivors—many of which had lived in the shadows of the giants—began to diversify rapidly. This period saw the rise of mammals and other small creatures that would eventually give rise to the modern biodiversity we see today. These survivors thrived in the wake of the devastation. They eventually populated the continents and oceans. This transition shaped the modern world's biological diversity.

A common misconception is that the 'heyday of gigantism' ended with the Cretaceous period. However, evidence suggests that remarkable body size was not exclusive to dinosaurs. In the aftermath of the extinction, certain mammal lineages evolved large bodies with surprising speed. For example, the pantodonts emerged as significant large-bodied mammals, with the herbivorous Barylambda becoming a dominant figure in western North American forests between 50 million and 60 million years ago. These animals occupied roles previously held by dinosaurs. They demonstrated that large size was a recurring evolutionary strategy. This shift occurred shortly after the non-avian dinosaurs vanished.

Barylambda, an eight-foot-long, thousand-pound creature, serves as a key marker for when mammals began expanding into new ecological niches. While it resembled the giant sloths that would appear tens of millions of years later, it was uniquely adapted to its own ancient environment. Beyond land mammals, the oceans saw the rise of formidable predators like the megalodon shark, while land landscapes shifted into vast grasslands and forests, supporting a diverse array of life including saber-toothed cats and massive ground sloths. Ancient reptiles like plesiosaurs were replaced by these new marine hunters. The changing climate also created expansive new habitats. These environments supported a wide variety of diverse species.
