The cosmic shortlist: 45 planets where life might be hiding

In short: Out of over 6,000 known exoplanets, astronomers have narrowed the search for extraterrestrial life down to fewer than 50 rocky worlds. By identifying these specific targets, researchers are creating a literal roadmap for humanity's first potential encounter with alien biology.

Data from NASA's Exoplanet Archive and the Gaia mission of the European Space Agency were examined by a group including Cornell University's Carl Sagan Institute head, Professor Lisa Kaltenegger. Their goal was to identify planets located within the 'habitable zone'—the orbital region where temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold to allow for liquid water on a planet's surface. Because liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for life as we know it, these worlds represent the highest-priority targets in our search for neighbors.

The study, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, identifies 45 rocky planets that meet these basic criteria. However, the team also highlighted a more conservative '3D habitable zone' containing 24 planets. This smaller selection applies more rigorous criteria regarding the temperature limits a planet can endure while remaining habitable. Notable candidates include well-known worlds like Proxima Centauri b and TRAPPIST-1f, alongside lesser-known targets such as TOI-715 b.

The research is inspired by the narrative of the book and film 'Project Hail Mary,' which features fictional lifeforms like Astrophage and Taumoeba. Professor Kaltenegger notes that while we use these stories to imagine possibilities, the real science aims to find where life might be most versatile. Among the most intriguing targets are the TRAPPIST-1 d, e, f, and g planets, located 40 light-years away, as well as LHS 1140 b, situated about 48 light-years from Earth.

This project serves as a practical guide for future exploration. By filtering thousands of candidates into a manageable list of fewer than 50, scientists are providing the coordinates for what could eventually be humanity's first interstellar voyage to find life.
