We have narrowed the search for alien life to 45 planets
In short: Finding life in the cosmos used to be a matter of pure imagination. Today, it is a data-driven hunt. Astronomers have sifted through thousands of discovered worlds to identify the specific rocky planets most likely to harbor liquid water and the chemical signatures of life.
While there are currently 7,414 confirmed exoplanets across 5,086 different systems, the search for life is becoming increasingly targeted. Researchers using data from the ESA’s Gaia mission and NASA archives have narrowed the field to fewer than 50 rocky planets that possess the right conditions to support life. These worlds are located in the 'habitable zone'—a region around a star where temperatures are moderate enough to allow liquid water to exist on a planet's surface.
The search relies on a technique called transit spectroscopy. By observing light from an exoplanet's atmosphere as it passes by its star, scientists can split the light into a rainbow spectrum to read it like a barcode. This allows them to identify a 'menu' of gases and chemicals. Key indicators include oxygen, carbon dioxide, and methane, which are strong signs of life on Earth. More advanced future observations might even detect signs of photosynthesis or 'technosignatures'—atmospheric pollution or traces of technology created by intelligent civilizations.
Among the top targets are well-known worlds like Proxima Centauri b, TRAPPIST-1f, and Kepler 186f. The study, led by Professor Lisa Kaltenegger of the Carl Sagan Institute, even identified a more restrictive '3D habitable zone' based on tighter heat tolerance limits, highlighting 24 specific planets. While we currently lack a universally accepted definition of life, these 45 targets represent our best chance of finding a 'game changer'—an exoplanet with a high probability of hosting biological activity.
