From Earth to the Universe is the first full-length fulldome planetarium film released for free, high-resolution public use. Directed by Theofanis Matsopoulos, this 30-minute journey through space and time invites planetariums worldwide to translate, narrate, and adapt the film, turning a singular scientific vision into a truly global, collaborative educational experience.
Released in its second version on August 5, 2016, From Earth to the Universe represents a significant shift in how astronomical education is distributed. Originally produced for the ESO Supernova Planetarium and Visitor Centre—which opened in the spring of 2018—the project was designed from the outset to be an open resource. By providing the script and split audio files alongside high-resolution 4k fulldome files, the European Southern Observatory encourages local institutions to tailor the experience for their own audiences.
The technical evolution of the film is substantial. Version 2, directed by Theofanis Matsopoulos, introduced higher resolution star maps, improved image quality, and a new 3D model of the Milky Way. It also incorporates fresh video footage of the Very Large Telescope, captured by the fulldome expedition. These updates ensure that the visual narrative remains as accurate as the scientific data it presents, reflecting the ongoing commitment of the production team to maintain a high-fidelity representation of the cosmos.
The project’s true strength lies in its collaborative nature. The film has been adapted into numerous languages, including German, French, and Spanish, with production teams ranging from the Naval Hill Planetarium in South Africa to the Eugenides Foundation in Greece. This decentralized approach allows for diverse cultural interpretations of the same scientific content. By sharing translated scripts and audio files back with the community, these institutions contribute to a growing, shared library of astronomical knowledge, proving that the most effective way to share the universe is to invite the world to help tell the story.
