A mountain so sharp it defies the usual rules of geology
In short: Explore Steeple Mountain, a 7-kilometer-high geological marvel on Jupiter's moon, Io. This video uses high-resolution animations to reveal a peak that showcases some of the most extreme terrain in our solar system.
In April 2024, image scientists from JPL produced a 3D model of Steeple Mountain using data captured by the Juno spacecraft. The formation stands as a testament to the volatile geological activity on Io, one of Jupiter's many moons.
While humans cannot hike this peak today, the animation allows for an immersive exploration of its unique structure and stunning views from a world defined by extreme conditions.
