Why the Sun shouldn't be shining according to classical physics

The Sun Should NOT Be Shining (Physics Proves It) | Feynman Explains · 13:21 · Video: Explained By Feynman · Watch at the source

In short: The Sun’s core is far too cold to produce the fusion required to power our solar system. This video explores the scientific paradox of why our star functions despite seemingly impossible physical constraints.

According to classical physics, protons in the Sun's core cannot overcome their mutual electric repulsion because the core is roughly 1,000 times too cold for them to burn fuel. Despite this, the Sun has remained active for approximately 4.5 billion years.

The solution lies in quantum mechanics. In 1928, George Gamow discovered quantum tunneling—the ability of particles to pass through barriers they classically cannot cross. This concept was applied to stellar fusion by Atkinson and Houtermans in 1929, while independently solved by Gurney and Condon. The video highlights how these discoveries explain why the Sun generates heat at a rate comparable to a compost heap despite its immense scale.
