Our closest stellar neighbor might host a rocky, water-rich world

There May Be Life in The Closest Star System To Earth! · 14:18 · Video: Destiny · Watch at the source

In short: Just four light-years away, a planet named Proxima b orbits a cool red star. While it completes a full year in only 11 days, its position in the habitable zone suggests it could possess the one ingredient essential for life as we know it: liquid water.

The discovery of Proxima b represents a significant milestone in exoplanet research because it is the closest known planet to our solar system outside of the sun. Located in the Alpha Centauri triple star system, Proxima b was identified by a team led by Guillem Anglada-Escudé using the European Southern Observatory’s 3.6-meter telescope in Chile. By tracing subtle wobbles in the star's movement, astronomers determined the planet has at least 1.3 times the mass of Earth.

Despite its proximity to its host star—orbiting much closer than Mercury does to our sun—Proxima b sits within the habitable zone. Consequently, these conditions may permit water to collect in liquid form across the terrain. Some researchers have even suggested the possibility that it could be an ocean world, which would make it a primary candidate for searching for extraterrestrial life.

However, the discovery comes with significant scientific caveats. Because Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf—a star much smaller and cooler than our sun—the environment is vastly different from Earth's. Scientists currently do not know if Proxima b possesses an atmosphere, which is a critical factor in determining if the planet can actually maintain surface water or support life. The find serves as a 'game-changer' by confirming that rocky, potentially habitable planets are common in our immediate cosmic neighborhood.

The discovery reinforces the mounting evidence that many such planets exist nearby. While we cannot yet confirm its habitability, the proximity of Proxima b provides a unique opportunity for future telescopes to investigate whether the ingredients for life exist just a few light-years away.
