Beyond the gas giants lies a frozen frontier we are only just beginning to map

The Year of Pluto - New Horizons Documentary Brings Humanity Closer to the Edge of the Solar System · 58:34 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: For decades, the Kuiper Belt remained a mysterious realm of icy bodies orbiting far beyond Neptune. But a single mission, New Horizons, changed everything. Discover how a journey launched in 2006 transformed our understanding of the solar system's third zone and brought the edge of our neighborhood into focus.

The exploration of the outer solar system is a saga that began long before modern rocketry. Although the 2006 New Horizons launch headed for Pluto, the mission's scientific roots extend to 1930, following Clyde Tombaugh's finding of the dwarf planet. This discovery opened the door to the Kuiper Belt, a vast, third zone of our solar system located beyond the inner rocky planets and the outer gas giants. This region is characterized by a massive collection of small, enigmatic objects. These icy bodies reside in a distinct orbital layer that sits significantly further out than the orbits of Neptune's massive gas giants.

Managed by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, the New Horizons mission was designed, built, and is operated by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Maryland. Under the New Frontiers Program, overseen by Huntsville, Alabama's NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the craft aimed to finish surveying classical planets and start investigating this enigmatic, frozen area. The spacecraft's development and management are handled by the APL in Maryland for NASA's Washington-based Science Mission Directorate. This complex operation is a key component of the broader New Frontiers Program.

The mission reached a pivotal milestone in July 2015 during its incredible flyby of Pluto. This event provided humanity with its first close-up look at the dwarf planet, transitioning the mission from a voyage of transit to a deep study of the Kuiper Belt's small, mysterious objects. Through the work of scientists like Dr. James Green, John Spencer, Fran Bagenal, and Mark Showalter, the mission continues to seek answers to fundamental questions about the architecture of our solar system. The documentary, titled "The Year of Pluto," offers a one-hour look at the hard science behind the mission. It features insights from experts including Dr. James Green and Mark Showalter to explain the mission's profound importance.
