The science of fun: capturing stillness in microgravity
In short: Watch what happens when an entire space station crew tries to freeze in place. This video reveals the behind-the-scenes outtakes from Thomas Pesquet’s viral mannequin challenge, offering a rare look at life and levity aboard the International Space Station.
During his six-month Proxima mission, ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet led the Expedition 50 crew in a coordinated effort to mimic the "mannequin challenge" while orbiting Earth. While the final result was described as "sci-fi spooky," these outtakes capture the unpolished reality of trying to remain motionless in a weightless environment.
Beyond the humor, Pesquet's mission serves a rigorous purpose: performing approximately 50 scientific experiments for ESA and CNES. These activities are designed to turn Earth-orbiting spacecraft into functional workplaces, gathering data that will eventually help prepare humanity for deeper voyages into the Solar System.
