The engineering challenge of making a spaceplane truly reusable

Using a Spaceplane as a Reusable Launch Vehicle in Kerbal Space Program 0.18 · 13:38 · Video: Scott Manley · Watch at the source

In short: Most orbital planes are one-way trips, but this profile achieves a full mission cycle. Watch how a modified Aeris 4A manages to reach orbit, deploy a probe, and land safely without losing its primary structure.

The video demonstrates a complete launch profile in Kerbal Space Program 0.18, where a spaceplane serves as a reusable launch vehicle. Unlike standard designs, this craft successfully enters space, deploys a probe to the Mun, and returns for a touchdown on Kerbin.

The vehicle is a heavily modified Aeris 4A. To ensure stability, the designers removed the docking system and completely redistributed the tank system to solve chronic spinout issues. The only non-reusable component is the payload clamp, which is discarded after the probe is released.
