The cosmic neighborhood is far more complex than a simple void

What Actually Lies Beyond The Solar System? · 24:46 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: We often imagine the space beyond our solar system as an empty expanse. In reality, our galactic neighborhood is a dense, intricate web of multi-star systems, massive interstellar bubbles, and thousands of diverse worlds ranging from lava oceans to Styrofoam-like planets.

The structure of our immediate cosmic vicinity is surprisingly crowded. Just a few light-years from Earth, we find a variety of stellar arrangements, including the six-star system of Castor and the nearby star Barnard’s Star. Beyond these individual stars lies the Local Bubble, a massive structure that surrounds our solar system. This complexity extends to the very nature of the stars themselves; for instance, young stars like AP Columbae exhibit unique behaviors that differ from older, more stable stars.

Our understanding of planetary systems is expanding at an accelerating rate. For over three decades, NASA has been confirming the existence of exoplanets—worlds orbiting stars outside our own solar system. As of recent counts, the number of confirmed exoplan enough to exceed 6,000. Most of these discoveries are concentrated within a relatively small region of the Milky Way, specifically within thousands of light-years of our solar system. Even the closest known exoplanet, Proxima Centauri b, remains approximately 4 light-years away.

The diversity of these worlds challenges our perceptions of habitability. Scientists categorize these planets into groups such as gas giants, Neptunian, super-Earth, and terrestrial, including subcategories like mini-Neptunes. Some possess densities as low as Styrofoam, while others are rocky, iron-rich, or covered in molten seas. While the 'Goldilocks zone'—the area around a star where liquid water could exist—is a key focus for finding life, many discovered systems lack planets entirely, or contain worlds that are far more extreme than our own.
