The celestial hierarchy of space debris and cosmic snowballs
In short: We often use these terms interchangeably, but they describe distinct stages of a journey through our solar system. From frozen balls of ice to scorching streaks of light in our atmosphere, understanding these objects reveals the leftovers of our planetary neighborhood's violent birth.
Originating around 4.6 billion years ago during our solar system's birth, these space objects consist mostly of metal, ice, and rock. While they are too small to be classified as planets, they represent some of the most spectacular objects in astronomy.
The distinction between them often depends on composition and location. Asteroids are rocky objects, many found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. In contrast, comets are 'cosmic snowballs' composed of frozen water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and organic compounds. When a comet nears the Sun, these ices vaporize, creating a fuzzy appearance and a long tail of gas and dust.
Meteors represent a change in state. A meteoroid is a small piece of an asteroid or comet—often pebble-sized and created by collisions. When such a fragment enters Earth's atmosphere at high speed, it becomes a meteor, burning up to create the 'shooting star' effect. If the object survives this intense heat and impacts the ground, it is officially classified as a meteorite.
Size varies wildly among these bodies. While most asteroids are only a few kilometers across, Ceres stands out as the largest at 1003 km in diameter. Pallas and Vesta are notable for being visible to the naked eye with diameters of about 500 km.
