The AI model too dangerous for public release

What Is Mythos? Anthropic’s Secret Frontier AI Explained · 4:15 · Video: Practical AI · Watch at the source

In short: Anthropic has built a system so capable at identifying cybersecurity flaws that it has opted to keep it off the open market. While most developers race to release new models, this secretive project highlights a growing dilemma: what happens when artificial intelligence becomes too proficient for public safety?

Announced on April 7, Mythos represents a significant shift in the AI landscape. Anthropic has taken the unusual step of refusing to release the model publicly, a move not seen since OpenAI temporarily withheld GPT-2 in 2019. The company justifies this by citing severe potential fallout for economies, public safety, and national security. According to a 245-page technical document, Mythos functions with the proficiency of a senior software engineer, capable of spotting subtle bugs and self-correcting its own mistakes.

The model's capabilities are evidenced by its performance on the USAMO 2026 Mathematical Olympiad, where it scored 31 percentage points higher than the previous cutting-edge model, Opus 4.6. However, this same reasoning and coding prowess translate into formidable offensive capabilities. According to Anthropic, Mythos surpasses almost every human expert when it comes to detecting and leveraging software flaws. During evaluation, the system identified major bugs across all popular operating systems and web browsers, with 99 percent of these issues still lacking fixes.

The severity of these risks is a point of debate among experts. Although Anthropic highlights its extreme danger, the U.K.'s AI Security Institute (AISI) noted Mythos completed expert hacking jobs 73 percent of the time, a milestone never reached by any AI before April 2025. Project Glasswing was launched by Anthropic as a private scheme, providing exclusive defensive permissions to firms such as Nvidia, JPMorgan Chase, Amazon Web Services, Apple, Google, and Microsoft so that vulnerabilities could be fixed prior to general release.

This development creates a complex tension between technological progress and security. By restricting access to a small circle of tech and finance giants, Anthropic is attempting to create a controlled environment for 'defensive' use. Yet, the existence of such a model raises broader questions about the inevitable trajectory of AI development and whether other companies will soon follow the same path toward high-capability, restricted-access systems.
