Living in a house that sees 16 sunsets every single day
In short: Imagine living in a home larger than a six-bedroom house, hurtling through the sky at 17,000 mph. To survive the constant motion and the lack of gravity, astronauts must navigate a world where coffee can't be sipped from a mug and the sun rises every 90 minutes.
The International Space Station (ISS) is a complex laboratory operated by a partnership of five space agencies from 15 countries. While it provides a home for humans in outer space, it presents unique physiological and psychological hurdles. Because the station orbits the Earth so rapidly, the sun rises and sets 16 times every 24 hours. To prevent a state of permanent jetlag, astronauts follow a rigorous daily schedule that begins at 6:00 AM and concludes at 9:30 PM. Daily life is divided into specific blocks: mornings are dedicated to maintenance, which often requires astronauts to suit up for extravehicular activities. Afternoons are reserved for the primary mission—conducting scientific experiments in research modules to expand our understanding of life in space.
Because microgravity causes muscles to atrophy and bones to become brittle very quickly, regular exercise in a dedicated gym is a non-negotiable part of the daily routine. Logistics in space require constant vigilance against floating debris. Food is typically dehydrated and rehydrated with warm water because crumbly items like toast or open mugs of coffee are prohibited; any loose particles could float away and become lodged in equipment. Despite these challenges, the station is well-supplied with necessities like fresh fruit. Beyond the science, NASA and other partners also manage the human side of spaceflight, including nutrition, psychological health, and even coordinating absentee ballots so astronauts can participate in elections from orbit.
