The engineering secrets hidden beneath Liberty's copper skin
In short: Explore the internal anatomy of the Statue of Liberty. This animation reveals the complex structural framework and spiral staircases that allow this colossal monument to stand.
While the exterior is composed of hand-hammered copper sheets, the statue is supported by a massive internal skeleton. To ensure its 305-foot elevation remains steady, four massive steel pillars were incorporated into the build by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel and Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc.
The interior layout includes a spiral staircase leading to an observation platform in the crown. Additionally, a 42-foot service ladder is tucked inside the arm to reach the torch, which measures 29 feet from the flame tip to the handle base.
