Mirrors do not actually flip left to right

Why Do Mirrors Flip Left & Right (but not up & down)? · 3:24 · Video: minutephysics · Watch at the source

In short: When you look in a mirror, it feels like your world has been horizontally inverted. However, physics suggests a different reality: mirrors don't swap left and right at all. They perform a much more specific transformation that our brains are simply wired to misinterpret.

The phenomenon of reflection is governed by the law of specular reflection, which states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. When light hits a mirror, it bounces back in a way that preserves the position of the sides (left stays left, right stays right) and the top and bottom. Instead of a horizontal flip, mirrors perform a front-to-back inversion. If you imagine an object standing in front of a mirror, its image appears to be behind the glass with the front side swapped for the back side.

We often perceive this as a left-right flip because of how we interact with text and our own bodies. For example, when we see the word 'Ambulance' on a vehicle, it appears flipped in a rearview mirror. This is not because the mirror inverted the letters horizontally; rather, the viewer has turned their head to look at the ambulance from a different perspective. If you were to hold a word up to a mirror so that both the original and its reflection are visible simultaneously without turning your head, you would see they read in the same direction.

This distinction matters because it clarifies how we perceive 3D space. A mirror is not a window into an alternate universe where left and right are swapped; it is a surface that reverses the depth axis. By tracing light rays from specific points on an object to their reflection, physicists can demonstrate that the lateral positions remain constant while only the front-back orientation changes.
