Why some people are mosquito magnets (it’s not your blood)

Why Some People Are Mosquito Magnets (It’s Not Your Blood) · 13:53 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: Ever wonder why mosquitoes seem to ignore some people while swarming others? While popular myths blame blood type or diet, the real secret lies in a complex chemical cocktail on your skin. New research reveals that specific fatty acids may be the primary signal that makes you a target.

Research has established for more than a century that the carbon dioxide emitted by humans serves as a primary lure for mosquitoes. From distances of several dozen metres, this initial cue initiates their hunting actions. As they draw closer—within about 10 meters—they begin to detect our body odor, heat, and humidity. These sensory cues allow female mosquitoes, the only ones that bite, to choose their specific targets.

Despite widespread belief, there is no scientific basis for the idea that mosquitoes prefer specific blood types, skin colors, or diets involving garlic and bananas. Recent research published in the journal Cell suggests the true deciding factor is a unique scent profile. To be precise, individuals with skin emitting large quantities of carboxylic acids—a category of fatty acids—experience the highest attraction from these insects. These compounds remain relatively steady over time, regardless of a person's grooming habits or what they eat.

To test this, researchers conducted a multi-year study using Aedes aegypti mosquitoes—the primary vectors for diseases like Zika and dengue. They used a round-robin "tournament" to test nylon stockings worn by eight participants. The results were staggering: one participant was four times more attractive than the next most-attractive person and a massive 100 times more appealing than the least attractive participant. This suggests that individual variations in skin microbiota and the resulting "soup of molecules" create distinct levels of attractiveness to these pests.
