Scanning the cosmos for what is invisible to our eyes
In short: NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) was designed to map the universe in infrared light, revealing cosmic secrets that remain hidden from traditional telescopes.
Launched on December 14, 2009, from Vandenberg Air Force Base, WISE orbits Earth over the poles. Its primary objective is to scan the entire sky one-and-a-half times within a nine-month period.
The mission focuses on detecting specific celestial phenomena: the universe's coolest stars, dark asteroids, and highly luminous galaxies. By utilizing infrared technology, it uncovers objects that do not emit much visible light.
