In short: Ashlyn Harris didn't just face strikers; she faced a series of devastating physical setbacks. From shattering her thumb to tearing both ACLs in rapid succession, her path to becoming a two-time World Cup champion is a masterclass in athletic resilience and professional persistence.

Harris's collegiate career at the University of North Carolina was defined by extreme physical adversity. In the spring of 2005, a ball caught her hand and shattered her thumb, requiring surgery to insert three pins. Shortly after returning to practice that same summer, she tore her right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Following a difficult rehabilitation, her left ACL suffered a new rupture in June 2006 while training with the U-21 Women's National Team.

Despite these major injuries, Harris displayed remarkable tenacity. She returned to the pitch in November 2006 to play in all six NCAA tournament matches, appearing as a substitute in each. She also navigated a torn labrum in her right hip in 2007, choosing to play through the pain by switching to predominantly using her left leg. This period of her career was marked by a 'two-goalkeeper' system at UNC, where she split time with teammate Anna Rodenbough before eventually taking over as the sole starter in 2009.

Her professional journey took her across the globe, from the NWSL and WPS in the United States to the Frauen-Bundesliga in Germany and the Damallsvenskan in Sweden. She played for the USA women's national side, winning trophies during the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada plus the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. Her career is a testament to overcoming the 'what ifs' of injury to achieve elite international success.
