Can reliving your deepest regrets actually help you fix your future?
In short: When Erica Strange wakes up in a hospital after an accidental allergic reaction, she meets a therapist with a metaphysical gift. Dr. Tom offers her the chance to travel back in time to relive her greatest regrets, but the goal isn't to erase the past—it's to learn how to live in the present.
From 5 January 2009 until 12 December 2011, CBC broadcast the Canadian comedy-drama *Being Erica*, featuring 32-year-old Erica Strange, an educated underachiever. After accidentally consuming hazelnut flavoring, which triggers a severe allergy, Erica encounters Dr. Tom. He reveals he can send her back in time to revisit specific regrets, providing her with the insights needed to navigate her complicated career and love life. Originally titled The Session, the show was produced by Temple Street Productions. It was eventually distributed to international audiences by BBC Worldwide.
The series explores the complex mechanics of this temporal therapy. Rather than allowing Erica to simply change the outcome of an event to avoid pain, the sessions often result in the same event occurring. Instead, Erica must uncover the true meaning of the experience to gain the perspective required to handle her present-day problems. This process raises profound questions about agency and destiny: can a patient change another person's fate, or can a therapist intervene without a patient's knowledge? The show's final season aired between September and December 2011. During the fourth season, creator Jana Sinyor noted the series had reached a natural conclusion.
As the narrative progresses, the show moves from personal struggles to broader metaphysical implications, including the use of group therapy sessions to discuss these time-traveling experiences. The series follows Erica's transformation from an unlucky underachiever to a successful doctor. By the series finale in late 2011, Erica has completed her medical training and becomes an official doctor, maintaining a connection to Dr. Tom through his daughter, Sarah. The protagonist's journey includes a professional transition from a publishing house editor to a medical professional. Her office is described as an artist's studio loft featuring a red desk.
