From high school bully to frontman of a multi-platinum rock band
In short: Before dominating the Billboard charts, Brendon Urie was a high school student working at a smoothie cafe to pay his band's rent. Now, the only constant member of Panic! at the Disco, he has transitioned from pop-rock stardom to focusing on family and new musical ventures.
Brendon Urie's ascent to musical prominence began in 2004 when he was recruited into Panic! at the Disco by classmate Brent Wilson. Though he originally joined as a guitarist and vocalist, a rehearsal with the band's founder, Ryan Ross, revealed Urie's vocal potential, leading to his role as lead singer. This partnership launched a career defined by commercial success, including the 2005 release of 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out,' which reached 1.8 million sales through its hit single 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies.'
Throughout the band's 19-year run, Urie remained the sole constant member. As the lineup shifted—including the departures of Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith—Urie continued to drive the group's success, achieving a number one album with 2016's 'Death of a Bachelor.' His versatility extends beyond rock; he has performed on Broadway in 'Kinky Boots,' collaborated with artists like Taylor Swift and Rivers Cuomo, and even contributed to the SpongeBob SquarePants musical, earning a Tony Award nomination for his score.
In a significant career pivot announced on January 24, 2023, Urie declared he would disband Panic! at the Disco to focus on raising his first child with his wife, Sarah Orzechowski. Since then, he has explored new musical directions, including playing drums for Mike Viola's band. Beyond the stage, Urie is known for his openness regarding his ADHD and synesthesia, and his philanthropic work through the Highest Hopes Foundation, which supports various social causes.
