In short: The British Rail Class 801 Azuma was designed to be a purely electric workhorse for the East Coast Main Line. However, a logistical bottleneck in the UK's rail infrastructure forced a major pivot, creating a distinct split in the fleet's identity and mechanical capabilities.

The Class 801 Azuma is a series of electric multiple units (EMUs) manufactured by Hitachi Rail at the Newton Aycliffe Manufacturing Facility. Ordered as part of the UK Government's Intercity Express Programme, these trains were intended to replace the aging InterCity 125 and InterCity 225 sets. While they share the Hitachi AT300 product family with the Class 800 units, the 801 was specifically engineered for electric operation, featuring only a single diesel engine on one coach for emergency use.

A significant shift occurred in June 2016 due to delays in the electrification of the Great Western Main Line (GWML). Originally, 21 nine-car (801/0) sets were destined for Great Western Railway (GWR). Because the tracks were not yet electrified, these units were converted to bi-modal operation—meaning they could run on both diesel and electricity—and re-classified as 800/3 units. This left the Class 801 designation exclusively for the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) services on the East Coast Main Line (ECML).

The rollout of the fleet began on September 16, 2019, with five-car units operating between Leeds and London King's Cross. By November 18, 2019, the introduction of nine-car Class 801/2 units on the route to Edinburgh created a strategic 'cascade' effect. This allowed the LNER to move Class 800/1 units to the Aberdeen route, ultimately enabling the withdrawal of the classic InterCity 125 sets from that line. Interestingly, GWR retains the option to remove diesel engines from their 800 units to convert them back to 801 status if they choose.

This evolution highlights the tension between high-tech rolling stock design and the reality of infrastructure readiness. The 801 serves as a prime example of how national rail strategy can force a manufacturer to bifurcate a single product line into different operational identities based on the pace of engineering upgrades.
