The initial father and son to appear on the same NBA court
In short: Born into the spotlight, Bronny James has navigated high-stakes recruiting, a sudden cardiac arrest, and a meteoric rise through the ranks. His journey from Sierra Canyon to the Los Angeles Lakers has culminated in a historic milestone: sharing the court with his father, LeBron James.
Bronny James’s ascent was marked by significant volatility in his professional trajectory. After being a consensus four-star recruit and a McDonald's All-American in 2023, his rankings fluctuated wildly. During his junior year, injuries caused him to drop as low as 60th in Rivals' rankings, before he rebounded to be ranked as the 9th-best player in his class by On3 during his senior season.
His collegiate career at the University of Southern California (USC) was interrupted by a life-threatening event. In July 2024, James collapsed during a practice session due to cardiac arrest caused by a congenital heart defect. He was released from the hospital on July 27, 2024, and was medically cleared to enter the NBA draft in early May 2024.
The culmination of his journey occurred on June 27, 2024, when the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the 55th overall pick. This made him part of the first active father-son duo in NBA history. On October 22, 2024, the historic moment arrived when he and LeBron James shared the court during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Since his NBA debut, James has also spent time in the NBA G League with the South Bay Lakers. He has shown flashes of high-scoring potential in that league, including a 30-point game on December 12, 2024, and a career-high 39 points on March 24, 2025.
