The 2018–19 NBA season was a period of significant transition for the league. The regular season officially commenced on October 16, 2018, and concluded on April 10, 2019. During this time, the league expanded its international footprint, scheduling preseason games in locations like Shanghai and Shenzhen, China, and regular-season matchups in London, United Kingdom, and Mexico City, Mexico. The league's global reach was further highlighted by the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers playing preseason matches in China. Additionally, the Washington Wizards were scheduled to face the New York Knicks at London's O2 Arena in January 2019.
The postseason, which began on April 13, 2019, culminated in the NBA Finals. The Toronto Raptors emerged victorious, defeating the defending champions, the Golden State Warriors, to secure the championship on June 13, 2019. Meanwhile, several veteran players concluded their careers, including Manu Ginóbili, who played 16 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, and Chris Bosh, who retired on March 26, 2019, after a 13-year career that included back-to-back championships with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013. Other notable retirements included Nick Collison, who spent his entire 15-year career with the Seattle SuperSonics and Oklahoma City Thunder. Furthermore, David West ended his 15-season tenure with the league on August 30, 2018.
