From football dreams to becoming an NBA champion
In short: Before he was a two-time NBA champion, Norris Cole was set to play college football. His pivot to basketball led him to shatter records at Cleveland State and eventually secure back-to-back titles with the Miami Heat.
Norris Cole's path to professional basketball began with an unexpected detour. Originally slated to attend Walsh University on a football scholarship, he was recruited by Cleveland State basketball coach Gary Waters instead. This transition proved fruitful; Cole became a standout athlete in Dayton, Ohio, where he eventually earned a bachelor's degree in health sciences.
During his collegiate career, Cole achieved historic milestones for the Cleveland State program. He led the team to its first-ever road victory against a Top 25 opponent and was the first individual in Horizon League history to be named both the league's most valuable player and its best defensive player. His senior year was particularly dominant, as he averaged 21.7 points per game and recorded a massive 41-point, 20-rebound performance against Youngstown State.
After being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2011, Cole was traded to the Miami Heat, where he quickly made an impact. He became one of the fastest rookies in franchise history to score 20 points in a home opener and played a vital role in the team's 2012 and 2013 championship runs. His journey since then has spanned the globe, including stints in China, Israel, Italy, France, Spain, and Egypt, where he helped an African club secure its first-ever win in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup.
Cole now works as an assistant coach for the Sioux Falls Skyforce within the NBA G League. His career serves as a testament to the versatility of elite athletes who can navigate diverse leagues and roles across multiple continents.
