From Argentine youth prospect to the elite stages of European football
In short: Enzo Barrenechea’s career has been a whirlwind of high-stakes transfers and resilient recoveries. After overcoming a devastating ACL injury, the defensive midfielder has navigated the top leagues in Italy, England, Spain, and Portugal, proving his mettle through a series of complex, multi-million euro moves.
Born on 22 May 2001, Enzo Barrenechea began his professional journey in Argentina with Newell's Old Boys. His ascent through the European ranks began in the summer of 2019 when he moved to the Swiss club Sion for a fee of €3.1 million. This early momentum led him to the Juventus system, joining their U23 reserve team in the winter of 2020. However, his progress faced a significant hurdle on 22 May 2021, when he suffered an ACL injury, a setback that sidelined him for months before his return against Seregno in February 2022.
Barrenechea's time at Juventus was marked by rapid transitions. After making his U23 debut against Lucchese in October 2020, he earned his first-team call-ups during the 2022–23 season. His senior debut for Juventus occurred on 2 November 2022, appearing as a late substitute in a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. By April 2023, the club officially announced his permanent promotion to the senior squad following a Serie A debut against Torino in February.
The midfielder's career is characterized by a series of strategic loans and permanent transfers. In August 2023, he joined Frosinone on loan, notably scoring against Napoli in the Coppa Italia. His move to the Premier League arrived on 1 July 2024, when he signed for Aston Villa in an €8 million deal, which included potential add-ons of €3 million. This transaction was part of a broader transfer dynamic involving Douglas Luiz and Samuel Iling-Junior. Following his stint in England, he moved to Valencia on loan in August 2024, and eventually joined Benfica on a loan deal in July 2025, featuring a complex structure involving a €3 million fee and a potential €12 million permanent transfer obligation.
