In short: In 1992, a music manager saw the blueprint for success in America's En Vogue and decided to replicate it in Britain. The result was Eternal, a powerhouse R&B group that sold 10 million records and defined a decade of British pop culture.

Formed in 1992 by Oliver Smallman, Eternal was built on a foundation of strategic musical positioning. After scouting sisters Easther and Vernie Bennett in a London nightclub, the label recruited Louise Nurding and her friend Kéllé Bryan. Their debut album, Always & Forever, was an immediate commercial juggernaut, peaking at number two on the UK Album Chart and becoming the year's biggest-selling debut album in 1994. The group's success was so significant that they were dubbed the UK's answer to the American group En Vogue.

The group's trajectory was marked by high-profile shifts and internal friction. Louise Nurding departed before the second album to launch a solo career, leaving the group as a trio. While they achieved a number-one hit with "I Wanna Be the Only One" in 1997, the group's internal dynamics eventually fractured. In 1998, Kéllé Bryan was controversially dismissed via fax by the Bennett sisters, citing a "breakdown in professional relations." This led to the group continuing as a duo until they disbanded in 2000 after being released from their EMI recording deal.

After decades of various reunions and individual projects—including Louise Redknapp's television career and Vernie Bennett's legal studies—the group has entered a new era. Following a 2014 reunion for The Big Reunion, the group faced further lineup changes. In 2023, a planned tour with the original lineup collapsed due to public disagreements over social media posts regarding LGBTQ+ issues. By March 2024, the Bennett sisters announced a new lineup featuring Christel Lakhdar, marking a definitive shift in the group's identity as they prepare for 2025 performances.

A 1997 compilation solidified Eternal's heritage, later verified in 2013 as the UK's top-selling girl group best-of record. Their career serves as a case study in the mechanics of girl group branding, the complexities of collective management, and the enduring power of R&B in the British mainstream.
