How a 2002 reality television battle created one of Britain's most successful pop groups
In short: In 2002, ITV launched Popstars: The Rivals, a high-stakes talent show designed to pit a boy band against a girl group in a race for the UK Christmas number one. The resulting competition birthed Girls Aloud, a group that would go on to achieve twenty consecutive top-ten hits.
Following the success of the original Popstars series and Pop Idol, producers sought to capitalize on the public's appetite for reality television by introducing a battle of the sexes. The show, hosted by Davina McCall, recruited contestants through auditions in cities including London, Glasgow, Leeds, and Manchester. After a rigorous bootcamp, the final twenty contestants moved into two houses, where their daily lives were captured by cameras, echoing the format of Big Brother.
The competition was defined by viewer interactivity. Fans voted via telephone, text, and the Red Button on digital remotes to eliminate performers until only five men and five women remained to form One True Voice and Girls Aloud. The tension culminated on 22 December 2002, when it was announced that Girls Aloud had secured the Christmas number one spot with their debut single, Sound of the Underground, selling approximately 213,000 copies in its first week. One True Voice followed at number two with sales of nearly 137,000.
While One True Voice faded, Girls Aloud enjoyed sustained commercial dominance. Over the next several years, the group released a string of platinum-certified albums and twenty consecutive top-ten singles. Member Cheryl, formerly Cheryl Tweedy, achieved significant solo success, becoming the first British female solo artist to secure five number-one singles in the UK. This legacy of chart-topping hits cemented the show's place in British pop culture history, far outlasting the initial rivalry that defined its 2002 broadcast.
