The only team to hold every major tag title simultaneously
In short: In 2017, brothers Matt and Jeff Hardy achieved a feat unmatched in wrestling history. They held seven different tag team titles from seven different companies at the exact same time. This wasn't just a feat of endurance; it was a testament to their status as the ultimate architects of high-risk spectacle.
The Hardy Boyz, also known as the Hardys, are an American professional wrestling tag team whose legacy is defined by 'extreme' innovation. Beginning their journey on the independent circuit in 1995, the brothers—Matt and Jeff—quickly gained notoriety for their high-flying tactics. They were instrumental in revitalizing tag team wrestling during the Attitude Era, specifically through their pioneering use of ladder matches and Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (TLC) matches. Their resume is unparalleled. No other tag duo has ever secured the WWE World Tag Team Championship, the WCW Tag Team Championship (in WWE), the TNA World Tag Team Championship, the ROH World Tag Team Championship, plus the Raw, SmackDown, and NXT Tag Team Championships.
Collectively, they have secured 15 world tag team championships across these three major promotions. In 2012, WWE officially ranked them as the number two greatest tag teams of all time. The brothers' career has been marked by significant turbulence, including a 2002 split where Jeff was released from WWE for erratic behavior and drug use, and a 2005 release for Matt due to social media conduct. Despite these hurdles, they have reunited multiple times, notably in 2006 and 2014. Their influence extends beyond just titles; they are credited with creating the blueprint for modern high-risk tag team competition, blending athletic spectacle with high-stakes storytelling.
In 2017, they reached a pinnacle of dominance by holding seven titles simultaneously, including the ROH and Impact World Tag Team Championships. While they are celebrated for their team dynamics, both brothers have also achieved individual success as multi-time world champions in singles competition.
