How a Civic-based crossover became a global SUV powerhouse
In short: Born in 1995 using the Civic's DNA, the Honda CR-V redefined the compact crossover. From its unique 'picnic table' interior to its status as a global best-seller, discover how this versatile vehicle carved out a dominant space in the automotive market.
The Honda CR-V first arrived in Japan in October 1995, designed by Hiroyuki Kawase. Interestingly, the original models utilized the same platform as the Honda Civic. This shared DNA allowed for a versatile design that included unique features, such as rear seats that folded flat to create a surface roughly the size of a twin bed, and a stowed picnic table in the rear floor. Early versions featured a unique one-piece cylinder sleeve construction. The suspension design utilised a double wishbone setup at the front and a trailing-arm-based multilink system at the rear.
The vehicle's evolution saw significant regional adaptations. In Indonesia, Honda customized the model with a third row of seating to navigate local tax regulations. In China, the model has been marketed as the Breeze since 2019, produced by Dongfeng Honda in Wuhan and Guangqi Honda in Guangzhou. The name itself is often interpreted by Honda as standing for 'Comfortable Runabout Vehicle,' though some British reviews have associated it with 'Compact Recreational Vehicle.'
The CR-V's market impact has been substantial. By 2020, it was the second best-selling SUV globally. Its success was driven by continuous refinements, such as the transition to the K-series engines in the second generation, which launched on 13 November 2001. Although the initial version moved over 40,000 units from 1997 to 2001, the successor kept its popularity, topping Australian SUV sales in 2000 and securing Car and Driver's Best Small SUV award for 2002 and 2003. The model's performance improved significantly in the 2000 model year due to a higher compression ratio and a new intake manifold. This update resulted in a faster 0–60 mph time of 8.6 seconds for the manual 4wd version.
