The versatile Honda D-series: a decades-long engine legacy
In short: From the compact Honda Logo to the spirited Civic, the D-series engine powered a generation of vehicles. Spanning over twenty years of production, this inline-four family demonstrated remarkable versatility through diverse configurations, ranging from simple carbureted setups to advanced, multi-stage variable valve lift technology.
The Honda D-series is an inline-four cylinder engine family that saw production from 1983 through 2005. Designed for a wide array of compact models, its application ranged from the small Honda Logo to the first-generation Integra, the CRX, and the Civic. The engines featured displacements between 1.2 and 1.7 liters, offering a broad spectrum of performance capabilities depending on the specific configuration and market. Commonly found in the Stream and various compact models, these engines served diverse global markets. This variety ensured the series remained a staple in many automotive segments.
Technologically, the series evolved significantly over its two-decade lifespan. Early iterations utilized PGM-CARB, a computer-controlled single port fuel delivery system. As the series matured, it transitioned toward multi-point fuel injection, known as PGM-FI. The valvetrain configurations also varied, with models utilizing either Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) or Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) setups, and featuring either two or four valves per cylinder.
The pinnacle of this engine's technological development was the D15B three-stage VTEC (D15Z7), a version designed for markets outside the United States. Power outputs across the series varied widely: while a Logo model might produce 66 PS (49 kW), a Japanese market Civic could reach up to 140 PS (103 kW). This range highlights the engine's ability to serve both economy-focused commuters and more performance-oriented driving experiences.
