In short: Jack Gunston's career is a masterclass in adaptation. After growing 15 centimetres in just two years, he shifted from midfield to key positions, eventually becoming a three-time premiership player and a lethal set-shot specialist known for his methodical, balanced routine.

Gunston's professional journey began in 2009 when he was selected by Adelaide with the 29th pick in the AFL National Draft. His early years were marked by significant transitions, including a move from Adelaide back to Victoria due to homesickness, a decision that saw him stripped of the Mark Bickley Award for best young player. This move eventually led to a trade to Hawthorn, a move that would define his legacy in the league. He originally started his junior career at the Beaumaris Football Club. After being drafted by Adelaide, he finished the 2010 season by helping Central District secure a SANFL premiership.

At Hawthorn, Gunston became a cornerstone of a dominant era, securing three consecutive premierships in 2013, 2014, and 2015. His standout 2013 Grand Final display saw him emerge as a top performer, netting four goals and trailing teammate Brian Lake for the Norm Smith Medal. He proved his versatility by moving between the forward line and the backline, even filling roles in the centre when teammates were injured. He achieved a career-high of 58 goals during the 2014 season. Additionally, he was named Hawthorn's leading goalkicker in 2015.

Known as a 'sharp-shooter,' Gunston's accuracy is statistically remarkable. At the close of 2013, his accuracy surpassed all other top 50 goalkickers, having converted 82.5 per cent of set shots over the previous two years. His career has been defined by this precision and a highly disciplined set-shot routine focused on a straight drop, helping him achieve multiple leading goalkicker titles and All-Australian honors. His precision is further highlighted by his 2025 season, where he finished third in the Coleman Medal. During that year, he also earned his second All-Australian blazer and his second Peter Crimmins Medal.
