The muscle car in a tuxedo: Jaguar's final steel-bodied masterpiece
In short: The Jaguar X308 was born from a cancelled project and a mechanical pivot. It became the brand's first V8-powered saloon, blending traditional British elegance with a modern drivetrain. It remains a coveted classic for its unique ability to feel sophisticated in a country hotel and powerful on the open road.
The X308 was the third and final evolution of the XJ40 platform, which had been in production since 1986. It was originally intended to be replaced by a brand-new saloon called the XJ90. However, Ford halted the XJ90's development, and Jaguar pivoted to the X308. This transition was significant because it marked the debut of the AJ-V8 engine, replacing the discontinued AJ16 inline-six and V12 engines.
While it retained the rounded styling of its predecessor, the X300, the X308 introduced critical interior and mechanical updates. The dashboard was redesigned to feature three deeply recessed dials, similar to the XK8, which allowed for the restoration of a functional glove compartment—a feature lost on the original XJ40 when a passenger airbag was retrofitted. Mechanically, the car offered a 3.2 L or 4.0 L V8, with the 4.0 L version being supercharged in specific models like the XJR.
The X308's legacy is defined by its versatility and engineering. It featured Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS) and was noted for its ability to balance luxury with performance. Critics have praised it as a 'musclecar in a tuxedo,' highlighting its status as the last steel-bodied XJ. It served as the official car for several British Prime Ministers, including Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, before the transition to the Range Rover in 2019.
For enthusiasts, the X308 represents a specific era of Jaguar history. It offered distinct variants ranging from the high-luxury Sovereign—featuring highly figured burr walnut and fluted leather—to the high-performance XJR. The XJR even featured a special 'R1' performance package with 18-inch BBS wheels and Brembo brakes, capable of reaching 97 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
