José Mourinho entered elite football as Bobby Robson's interpreter
One of the most decorated managers in history got his break translating for someone else. In 1992 Bobby Robson arrived at Sporting in Lisbon needing an English-speaking local, and a former lower-league midfielder named José Mourinho took the job. Within a decade the interpreter was winning the Champions League himself.
Mourinho was born in Setúbal in 1963, the son of a goalkeeper who once played for Portugal. His own playing career was modest; he mostly turned out for reserve sides, his father's club blocked his selection over fears of nepotism, and he retired at 24. He failed maths at school, walked out of business college on his first day, and studied physical education in Lisbon before taking coaching courses run by the English and Scottish football associations.
Alongside Robson, he did far more than translate. He followed the Englishman to Porto, where they won two league titles, and then to Barcelona, where he planned training and analysed opponents while a young Ronaldo, whom he ranks as the best player since Maradona, led the attack. When Robson moved on, Barcelona kept Mourinho, and the next coach, Louis van Gaal, handed him the reserve team and sometimes stepped aside to act as his assistant. Robson's lesson stayed with him: winning does not make you the team, and losing does not make you rubbish.
His first head coach job came at Benfica in 2000. Back at Porto from 2002 he won the UEFA Cup and then the Champions League, earning the move to Chelsea and two league titles. At Inter in 2010 he completed the first continental treble by an Italian club and became the first FIFA world coach of the year. Titles followed at Real Madrid, a second spell at Chelsea and Manchester United.
Nicknamed the Special One, he has won leagues in four countries and is the only manager to claim all three current UEFA club competitions, the last being the first Conference League with Roma. In July 2026 he returned to Real Madrid.
