Jordan Pickford served a long apprenticeship on loan before becoming England's number one
Before Jordan Pickford ever played a Premier League game, he had kept goal for six clubs on loan, from non-league Alfreton to Championship Preston. By his 2016 top-flight debut, still only 21, he had played in all five of English football's top divisions. The grind shaped England's most dependable goalkeeper in decades.
He was born Jordan Logan in Washington, near Sunderland, in March 1994; his father later changed the family name. A Sunderland fan as a boy, he joined the club's academy at eight. Then came the wandering years. At Darlington he played 17 times in a season that ended in relegation; at Alfreton he kept five clean sheets in 12 games; Burton recalled and re-signed him; Carlisle and Bradford followed. At Preston he matched the club record with six straight clean sheets, and veteran keeper Chris Kirkland said he had never seen anyone kick a ball like him.
Everton paid an initial 25 million pounds in 2017, rising to 30 million with add-ons, making him at the time the most expensive British goalkeeper ever. Errors have followed him, including a fumbled ball that gifted Liverpool a 96th-minute derby winner in 2018, and a season in which he led the league in mistakes leading to goals. Yet he was voted Everton's player of the season three years running and won a save-of-the-season award in 2022 for scrambling back across his line against Chelsea after a shot struck both posts.
For England he has been the constant. He started at the 2018 World Cup, where England reached their first semi-final since 1990, and at Euro 2020, not conceding a goal in the group stage as England reached their first major final since 1966. He started again at Euro 2024 and at the 2026 World Cup, where England finished third.
In September 2026, a goalless draw at Tottenham gave him his 100th Premier League clean sheet, making him only the fifth Englishman in goal to reach that mark.
