How a video game studio built a platinum-selling music label
In short: K/DA isn't just a virtual band; it is a masterclass in cross-media branding. By blending K-pop archetypes with gaming lore, Riot Games created a group that transcended the screen to top global charts and break industry records for virtual performers.
Developed by Riot Games, K/DA was conceived as a way to expand the musical footprint of League of Legends. Rather than just creating a soundtrack, Riot built an internal music division capable of handling distribution, A&R, and promotion like a standard record label. The group consists of four characters—Ahri, Akali, Evelynn, and Kai'Sa—selected specifically because they fit K-pop archetypes: the charming leader, the rebellious rapper, the provocative diva, and the silent loner.
The project debuted at the 2018 World Championship with a high-concept augmented reality performance of "Pop/Stars." The strategy was to create a 'dope League moment' where fantasy met reality. While human singers like Madison Beer and Jaira Burns provided vocals, AR versions of the characters performed impossible physical feats, such as Ahri flying onto the stage. This hybrid approach allowed the group to maintain a 'raw human element' while showcasing supernatural abilities.
The commercial success was unprecedented. "Pop/Stars" surpassed 100 million views in one month and eventually reached 643 million views by September 2025. The RIAA granted a platinum certification to 'Pop/Stars' during 2022, which established K/DA and I-dle as the initial K-pop female acts to reach such a goal. This success paved the way for a full EP in 2020 and expanded the brand into other titles like Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, and Just Dance.
Beyond aesthetics, the project was deeply integrated into the game's economy. K/DA skins were released for approximately US$10 (1350 RP), turning virtual popularity into tangible revenue. The group even influenced new character designs; in Teamfight Tactics, Riot created 'Superfan' skins for Lillia and Neeko to reflect the community's obsession with the band.
