At this elite academy, your social status is determined entirely by high-stakes gambling
In short: Hyakkaou Private Academy is no ordinary school. For its ultra-wealthy students, academic success is irrelevant. Instead, the hierarchy is built on a ruthless gambling system where fortunes are won and lost. When a mysterious new transfer student arrives, she threatens to dismantle the entire structure for the pure thrill.
In the world of Kakegurui, created by writer Homura Kawamoto and illustrator Tōru Naomura, Hyakkaou Private Academy serves as a microcosm of extreme social stratification. While the school houses the children of Japan's most influential and wealthy families, their future prospects are not dictated by grades or sports. Instead, students engage in intense gambling matches after class. Those who win gain prestige and power, while those who lose fall into debt, becoming subservient 'Pets' identified by collar-like tags.
The arrival of Yumeko Jabami, a transfer student with a compulsive need for the thrill of the gamble, disrupts this established order. Unlike her peers, who gamble for financial or social advancement, Yumeko is driven by an unrestrained desire for risk. Her exceptional ability to observe and dismantle the cheating methods used by others makes her a dangerous anomaly, eventually drawing the attention of the Student Council president, Kirari Momobami.
Since its serialization began in Gangan Joker in March 2014, the franchise has expanded into a massive multimedia phenomenon. Beyond the original manga, which reached twenty-two volumes by September 2026, the series has spawned multiple spin-offs like Kakegurui Twin, anime adaptations by MAPPA, live-action dramas, and films. The series even saw a Western reinterpretation titled Bet, which debuted on Netflix in 2025. As of June 2022, the manga had over 6.8 million copies in circulation, reflecting its enduring popularity as a dark exploration of obsession and power.
