In short: While many historic landmarks have become mere museums, New York City Hall remains a living engine of democracy. From hosting Abraham Lincoln to surviving architectural redesigns and political riots, this Manhattan icon has been the beating heart of the city since the early 19th century.

Built from 1803 to 1812, New York City Hall remains the most ancient US city hall still performing its primary civic duties, such as hosting the New York City Council and the Mayor's offices. The building's origins trace back to a 1802 competition where Joseph-François Mangin and John McComb Jr. won a $350 prize for the design. While Mangin contributed to the initial vision, McComb personally supervised the construction and managed architectural modifications throughout the extended building process.

The structure has undergone significant physical transformations. The architects of the Empire State Building, Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, swapped the initial Massachusetts marble front for Alabama limestone during the period of 1954 to 1956. The interior is equally storied, featuring a rotunda with Corinthian columns and a coffered dome added during a 1912 restoration. The building has also served as a site for national mourning, hosting the bodies of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant as they lay in state.

Despite its prestige, the building has faced periods of instability and violence. The 1857 New York City Police riot saw officers fighting in front of the hall during an attempt to arrest Mayor Fernando Wood. More recently, a 2003 security breach involving the fatal shooting of Councilman James E. Davis led Mayor Michael Bloomberg to mandate metal detectors for all visitors. Today, the hall remains a focal point for civic life, with its steps serving as a frequent backdrop for political demonstrations and press conferences.
