In short: What began as a decade of informal discussions and shifting timelines has finally arrived. After years of debate over franchise models versus merit-based promotion, the Australian Championship is set to debut, promising a new era for the nation's second-tier soccer landscape.

The journey toward a national second division in Australia has been marked by significant structural debate and shifting ambitions. For years, the idea of a second tier was discussed informally, but momentum truly gathered in October 2016. Nick Galatas led the formation of the Association of Australian Football Clubs (AAFC) Limited in March 2017 to initiate talks with Football Australia about a nationwide league.

The path to implementation faced several hurdles, including the global pandemic, which CEO James Johnson identified as a barrier to progress in late 2021. Early proposals for a 'National Second Division' (NSD) fluctuated in scope, with officials initially considering a 12-club model that would expand to 16. There was also a tension between adopting an American-style franchise system and a European-style format centered on promotion and relegation.

By 2023, the bidding process concluded with 32 teams entering, 26 of which progressed to formal proposals. While there were initial hopes for a full home-and-away season starting in early 2025, the format evolved. In early 2024, Football Australia announced the competition would launch as a post-season tournament in October 2025. Named the 'Australian Championship' in February 2025, the inaugural edition features 16 teams: eight permanent 'foundation clubs' and eight NPL premiers.

The tournament structure consists of a sixteen-team group stage divided into four groups of four, followed by a knockout stage. While the competition currently remains tied to the National Premier Leagues (NPL) structure, the long-term goal is to transform it into a stand-alone, home-and-away league. To ensure visibility, Football Australia partnered with SBS to broadcast matches live, including 17 matches on terrestrial television.
