The medical mystery and legal fallout of Reggie Lewis's fatal collapse
In short: When Boston Celtics star Reggie Lewis collapsed on the court in 1993, it sparked a decade of medical debate, legal threats, and a controversy over how the NBA handles the contracts of deceased players. His story remains a complex study of sports medicine and institutional policy.
Following Lewis's collapse during a playoff game against the Charlotte Hornets on April 29, 1993, he was diagnosed with focal cardiomyopathy by a 'dream team' of heart specialists. However, a second opinion from Dr. Gilbert Mudge suggested a less serious condition, neurocardiogenic syncope. This discrepancy allowed Lewis to begin training for a 1994–95 return, though Mudge later insisted he never authorized those workouts. Lewis died of sudden cardiac death during an off-season practice on July 27, 1993, at age 27.
The official cause of death was attributed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common cause of death in young athletes. However, the case became a flashpoint of controversy. The Wall Street Journal reported that many physicians suspected cocaine use contributed to the heart damage, but the coroner's official finding—that a common-cold virus damaged his heart—was criticized as medically nonsensical. While Lewis's heart tissue tested positive for adenovirus during the autopsy, the autopsy doctor testified that the scarring was inconsistent with cocaine use.
The fallout was both legal and administrative. The Celtics threatened a $100 million lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal over its reporting. Additionally, since the NBA possessed no 1993 rule allowing for the cancellation of agreements involving dead athletes, the Celtics' cap was occupied by Lewis's deal throughout two entire years. This prompted a rule change; today, such contracts are paid by league insurance, a mechanism that was later utilized for Chris Bosh in 2017.
