The unstoppable force who dominated the court before his heart gave out
In short: In 1989, Hank Gathers became a rare phenomenon, leading NCAA Division I in both scoring and rebounding. But behind the historic statistics was a hidden medical struggle that would turn a rising NBA star into a tragic legend of college basketball.
In the 1988–89 campaign, Gathers joined just one other NCAA Division I athlete by topping the country in both rebounding and scoring during one year. The Loyola Marymount star, who averaged 13.7 rebounds and 32.7 points per game, was a projected NBA lottery selection and a consensus second-team All-American. His presence fueled an era of unprecedented offensive output; the Lions' 122.4 points per game in 1990 remains a Division I record.
However, the physical toll of his high-intensity play was complicated by a medical diagnosis. After collapsing during a game against UC Santa Barbara on December 9, 1989, Gathers was diagnosed with exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia. He was prescribed the beta blocker Inderal, but he struggled with the medication's side effects. In an attempt to regain his performance, Gathers gradually reduced his dosage from 240 milligrams per day to as low as 40 milligrams.
The tragedy culminated on March 4, 1990, during a WCC tournament semifinal against the Portland Pilots. After scoring a dunk to put the Lions up 25–13, Gathers collapsed near midcourt. He was pronounced dead at Marina Del Rey Hospital at 6:55 PM PST at the age of 23. An autopsy later revealed he suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart-muscle disorder. His death sparked significant legal action, resulting in a $1.4 million settlement from Loyola Marymount and a $1 million settlement from his cardiologist.
