From a two-room home to the pinnacle of global cricket
In short: Rinku Singh’s journey from Aligarh to the international stage is a masterclass in perseverance. After years of domestic grinding, he became a household name by rewriting the record books in the final over of an IPL match, proving that explosive talent can emerge from humble beginnings.
Born in 1997 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rinku Singh grew up in a modest household where his father worked in a gas cylinder distribution company. His early life was defined by living in a two-bedroom accommodation provided by his employer, a stark contrast to the luxury often associated with modern cricket stardom. After starting in modest conditions, Singh played for Uttar Pradesh in the under-16, under-19, and under-23 categories prior to his 2014 List A introduction.
His rise to prominence was marked by both setbacks and historic milestones. After being bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 for ₹8 million, he faced a three-month suspension in 2019 for participating in an unauthorized tournament. However, he rebounded to deliver one of the most iconic performances in Indian Premier League history on April 9, 2023. Singh clinched a win by hitting five sixes for 29 runs during the concluding over against the Gujarat Titans, establishing a tournament peak for scoring in a victorious final over.
Singh's international career has been a study in consistency and high-pressure execution. He debuted in T20Is in August 2023 and quickly became known for his power, recording a strike rate of 175 against Australia in November 2023. He also shared a 190-run partnership with Rohit Sharma against Afghanistan in January 2024, the highest such partnership for India in T20Is. Having joined the state education department as a sports quota officer in 2025, Singh maintains his public duties alongside a career featuring the 2025 Asia Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup squads.
