The wide receiver who held every major NFL record at retirement
In short: In an era of explosive speed, Steve Largent conquered the gridiron through precision and sure-handedness. He didn't just play for a team; he became the gold standard for his position, retiring with a perfect sweep of the league's primary receiving records.
Steve Largent is widely regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers in the history of American gridiron football. His career was defined by technical mastery rather than raw athleticism; while not known for high speed, he excelled through precise route-running and exceptional sure-handedness. This reliability allowed him to become a cornerstone of the Seattle Seahawks during their formative years.
Largent's journey to the NFL was nearly derailed before it began. Despite an All-American career at the University of Tulsa, he was drafted in the fourth round by the Houston Oilers in 1976 as the 117th pick. He was nearly cut after four preseason games until a connection with coach Jerry Rhome led to a trade with the expansion Seattle Seahawks. His transition was further complicated by significant personal hardships, including severe sleep deprivation and financial strain while caring for his family.
His impact was immediate and historic. During the period from 1976 to 1981, Jim Zorn and Largent achieved a higher volume of yards plus completions than any other NFL duo. He led the league in receiving yards twice: first in 1979 with 1,237 yards and again in 1985 with 1,287 yards. His 1985 performance set a Seahawks franchise record that endured for 35 years until it was finally surpassed by DK Metcalf in 2020.
Beyond the field, Largent transitioned into a prominent political career. He served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1994 to 2002, representing Oklahoma's 1st congressional district. His legacy remains dual-faceted: a pioneer of wide receiver technique and a significant figure in American public service.
