How a mid-major program once claimed a national championship
In short: Southern Miss football has experienced extreme volatility, from elite national status to a historic single-season collapse. While the program has seen legendary coaches and SEC upsets, it also holds a record for one of the most dramatic drops in college football history.
The Golden Eagles' history is defined by eras of dominance and sudden decline. During the coaching tenure of Thad Vann, the program became one of the nation's most elite football programs, compiling a 139–59–2 record. Vann's success included claiming national championships in 1958 and 1962, and leading the team to the Sun Bowl in 1954. The squad famously upset Alabama in 1982, ending the Crimson Tide's 56-game home winning streak. This victory also marked the final loss of the legendary Bear Bryant's coaching career.
The program's stability was interrupted by both World Wars, with the team unable to field a team from 1917 to 1919 and again from 1943 to 1945. However, the program has also seen remarkable consistency, such as Jeff Bower's 14 consecutive winning seasons, which stands as the fifth longest streak in college football history. The program's history includes notable coaching figures like Reed Green, who managed the team for nine years. Additionally, the Golden Eagles have secured several bowl titles, including victories in the New Orleans and GMAC Bowls.
This success has not been without extreme lows. During 2012, led by Ellis Johnson, the Golden Eagles finished 0–12, marking the sole program across the country unable to secure any victories that season. This represented one of the largest single-season drops in the history of the sport, falling from a 12–2 record in 2011 to zero wins in 2012. This period of failure followed a highly successful 2011 campaign under Larry Fedora. During that season, the team achieved a school-record 12–2 finish.
Today, the Golden Eagles compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision as members of the Sun Belt Conference, playing their home games at Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The team's home field is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
