In short: He was the last cut from the Dallas Cowboys' roster in 1975. Yet, this overlooked athlete would go on to become the original starting quarterback for a franchise, shattering passing records and eventually leading the Washington Redskins as head coach.

James Arthur Zorn's path to professional football was anything but linear. A multi-sport athlete from Whittier, California, Zorn did not even begin playing organized football until his high school sophomore year. His early career was marked by physical setbacks, including a broken wrist during his junior year of high school, and coaching friction at the collegiate level, where he was benched during his sophomore season at Cerritos College due to leadership style concerns.

Despite being an undrafted free agent, Zorn found his footing with the Seattle Seahawks in 1976. As the franchise's inaugural starting quarterback, he became a cornerstone of the team's early identity. His era was defined by prolific production, including three consecutive 3,000-yard seasons and a 1978 season where he earned second-team All-Pro honors. His connection with Hall of Fame receiver Steve Largent helped cement his legacy, leading to his induction into the Seahawks Ring of Honor in 1991.

Zorn's career transitioned from a mobile, scrambling quarterback to a respected specialist in player development. As a coach, he tutored notable talents like Matt Hasselbeck in Seattle and Charlie Batch in Detroit. In 2008, he reached the pinnacle of coaching as the head coach of the Washington Redskins. While his tenure as a head coach was brief and met with significant challenges, his ability to develop Pro Bowl talent—such as running back Clinton Portis—remained a hallmark of his professional life.
