In short: In 1989, Thomas Muster was poised for greatness when a car accident severed the ligaments in his left knee. Many thought his career was over, but his relentless determination led to a historic comeback and a reign of dominance on the world's slowest tennis surface.

The accident occurred in the early hours of April 1, 1989, in Key Biscayne, Florida. Just hours after defeating Yannick Noah to reach the Lipton International final, Muster was struck by a car while unloading gear from his vehicle. The impact was severe, severing the ligaments in his left knee and leaving his ability to walk or play professionally in doubt.

His recovery was a feat of engineering and willpower. Working with coach Ronald Leitgeb, Muster used a specially designed chair that allowed him to practice hitting tennis balls while his knee healed. This unconventional training method worked; he returned to the professional tour within six months and finished 1989 ranked 21st in the world.

Muster’s career became defined by his mastery of clay courts, a surface that mitigated the physical disadvantage of his weakened knee due to its slower pace. After winning the 1995 French Open—becoming the first Austrian to win a Grand Slam singles title—he achieved a 40-match winning streak on clay. This remains the third-longest streak in the Open era, trailing only Björn Borg and Guillermo Vilas.

At his peak, Muster reached the world No. 1 ranking for six weeks between February and April 1996. He eventually secured 44 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including eight Masters titles, cementing his legacy as one of the most dominant clay-court specialists in tennis history.
