In short: The USS New York is not just a vessel of the sea; it is a floating memorial. Built using salvaged steel from the World Trade Center, the ship serves as a physical bridge between a tragic past and modern maritime defense.

Following the September 11 attacks, New York Governor George E. Pataki requested a special exception to Navy naming conventions. While state names were traditionally reserved for submarines, the Navy approved the name 'New York' for a surface warship to honor the victims. This led to the commissioning of the USS New York (LPD-21), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock. Two of its sister ships, the USS Arlington and USS Somerset, were similarly named to commemorate the other locations where planes from the attacks fell.

The ship's construction is steeped in symbolism. Approximately 7.5 short tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center rubble were melted down at Amite Foundry and Machine in Louisiana. This steel was cast into the ship's 'stem bar'—a critical structural component of the bow—on September 9, 2003. The foundry workers reportedly treated the material with 'reverence usually accorded to religious relics,' with one worker even delaying his retirement for 40 years to participate in the process.

Technically, the New York is a pioneer in amphibious mobility, designed as the first ship to support both LCAC landing craft and MV-22B Osprey aircraft. Despite its symbolic weight, the salvaged steel represents less than one-thousandth of the ship's total mass. The vessel officially entered service in 2009, performing its first 21-gun salute at the World Trade Center site on November 2, 2009, before beginning its career of global deployments and disaster relief.
